Every successful business starts with a dream. Sometimes that dream is born in a basement or garage, fueled by grit, late nights, and a whole lot of coffee. These are the stories that remind us why we believe in small business—and why we work so hard to support them at VMS.
Whether it’s a corner coffee shop that became a community staple or a side hustle that scaled into a full-blown franchise, these small business success stories prove that with the right tools, mindset, and heart, anything is possible.
Story #1: Sweet Success — From Kitchen Counter to Candy Empire
Business: Sugar & Joy Confections – Charleston, SC
Founded By: Lisa and Renee Taylor
VMS Client: Yes
Lisa and Renee didn’t plan to start a candy company. It all began with a homemade caramel recipe passed down from their grandmother. During the 2020 lockdowns, they started selling small batches on Instagram to pay rent. Orders flooded in.
They needed a better way to manage their exploding side hustle—and that’s when they found Velocity Merchant Services. We helped them get set up with a Clover Mini, enabling them to take payments in person at farmers markets, track inventory, and accept online orders.
Fast forward three years, and Sugar & Joy has gone from pop-up tent to permanent storefront, with plans to open a second location. Their story is a testament to how tradition, community, and technology can work together to create something truly sweet.
“We literally went from selling caramel in Tupperware to shipping nationwide. VMS helped us scale faster than we ever imagined.” – Lisa Taylor
Story #2: Revving Up Dreams — The Auto Shop That Could
Business: Pit Pros Auto – Naperville, IL
Founded By: The Ayoub Family
VMS Client: Yes
Pit Pros started as a single-bay garage in 2010. Just one lift, one mechanic, and a dream of becoming the go-to shop for honest car repairs. Today, Pit Pros is a full-service auto shop with a glowing reputation and five-star Google reviews.
VMS helped them streamline operations with a Clover Station and scan data loyalty integrations, turning oil changes into opportunities to build customer retention and offer instant discounts on eligible products.
“We’re mechanics, not tech people. But Clover made it easy to track jobs, take payments, and even run promos. VMS gave us the tools and the support to grow.” – Sami Ayoub
Story #3: The Pizza That Built a Neighborhood
Business: Frankie’s Pizza Napoletana – Detroit, MI
Founded By: Frank Campanella
VMS Client: No (but inspired by a real business)
Frankie was a classically trained chef who lost his job during the 2008 recession. Out of work but not out of hope, he converted his garage into a makeshift pizza kitchen. Word-of-mouth spread like melted mozzarella.
He saved every dollar from his first year of sales, eventually opening a brick-and-mortar location in 2011. Frankie’s now employs 12 people and regularly sells out on weekends. They partner with local farms, host school fundraisers, and have become a staple in their community.
The lesson? Start where you are, with what you have—even if that’s just a pizza oven in your garage.
Story #4: Clean Start — A Laundry Dream
Business: Bubble Up Laundromat – Boise, ID
Founded By: Jessica Nguyen
VMS Client: Yes
Jessica wanted to create a laundromat that felt less like a chore and more like a neighborhood hangout. She imagined a clean, tech-savvy, family-friendly space with good lighting, coffee, and even local artwork on the walls.
With help from VMS, she installed self-service Clover POS terminals with contactless payment options and customer loyalty programs. She also used Clover Flex to allow attendants to offer snack sales and reloadable laundry cards.
Jessica’s concept became so popular that she was recently featured on a “Best of Boise” small business list.
“It’s not just about laundry. It’s about creating a space where people feel welcome and supported. VMS helped me make that vision real.” – Jessica Nguyen
Story #5: Brewing Community One Cup at a Time
Business: North Shore Roasters – Evanston, IL
Founded By: Andre King
VMS Client: Not currently
Andre started roasting beans in his apartment as a college student. He was frustrated by the lack of flavor in store-bought coffee and became obsessed with perfecting the roast. What began as a hobby turned into a weekend coffee cart—and then into a full-blown café.
Today, North Shore Roasters is a thriving local hub, hosting poetry nights, live music, and coffee classes. Andre now offers a subscription service and partners with local bakeries for seasonal specials. His focus on quality, consistency, and customer experience made his shop one of Yelp’s top-rated cafés in Chicagoland.
Story #6: Haircuts and Hope — A Salon with a Mission
Business: True Roots Beauty Bar – Sacramento, CA
Founded By: Tasha Hayes
VMS Client: Yes
Tasha didn’t just want to open a salon—she wanted to empower women. After leaving an unfulfilling corporate job, she opened True Roots as a space for women of color to receive beauty services in a welcoming and affirming environment.
She used the Clover Dashboard to track appointments, product sales, and even offer gift cards. Tasha reinvests a portion of her profits into mentoring teen girls interested in cosmetology.
“I went from renting a chair to owning my own beauty bar. VMS gave me the confidence to believe in my dream—and the tools to run it like a real business.” – Tasha Hayes
Story #7: A Bakery Born from Burnout
Business: Whisk & Bloom – Tulsa, OK
Founded By: Priya Desai
VMS Client: Not currently
After experiencing burnout as a CPA, Priya took a sabbatical. She started baking to de-stress and discovered a hidden passion. She opened a cottage bakery out of her home, quickly gained a following on social media, and outgrew her kitchen within six months.
Now, Whisk & Bloom is a cozy storefront offering everything from vegan cupcakes to lavender lattes. Priya credits her success to listening to her customers—and never being afraid to pivot.
