Common Questions Small Business Owners Ask
Quick answers from our small business payment processing blog, with links to the full guides.
How much does credit card processing cost for a small business?
Most small businesses pay roughly 2% to 4% of their card sales in total processing fees, depending on their pricing model, the types of cards customers use, and whether cards are tapped, inserted or keyed in. To find your real cost, divide the total fees on your monthly statement by your total card volume. Our Credit Card Processing Fees articles explain each line on a statement and how to lower it.
How do I start accepting EBT and SNAP?
First, apply to the USDA Food and Nutrition Service for SNAP retailer authorization. Once approved, you receive an FNS number, and your EBT-certified terminal is set up with it so you can accept SNAP benefits. Our guide on how to accept EBT walks through every step.
What is a cash discount program?
With a cash discount program, your posted prices include the cost of card processing and customers who pay with cash receive a discount. It must be set up with clear signage and follow card brand and state rules. Learn how it works on our Cash Discount Program page.
Which POS system is right for my business?
It depends on where you take payments, how many items you sell, and whether you need EBT. Counter-based shops usually fit a countertop station, mobile businesses fit a handheld, and quick-service restaurants often add a self-order kiosk. Compare options on our POS systems for small business page.
How long does it take to switch payment processors?
Approval and setup usually take days, not weeks. Review your current contract for early termination fees, get approved for your new merchant account, then set up your new terminal before you turn off the old one so you never miss a sale. Our guide on how to switch payment processors covers each step, and it is one of the most-read guides on our merchant services blog.
What is PCI compliance, and do I need it?
PCI DSS is the card industry’s security standard, and every business that accepts cards must follow it, regardless of size. For most small businesses, that means completing an annual self-assessment questionnaire, using secure and up-to-date equipment, and never storing card numbers on paper or in spreadsheets. Our Security & Compliance articles explain what applies to you.
